Twenty spellers started the Lyndon Town School Scripps Spelling Bee; plucky 2nd, 3rd and 4th graders who had practiced in Spelling Club for weeks up against middle schoolers in their second and third time Bee contestants. They battled it out for Guest Pronouncer David Stahler and a packed house of over 60 friends and family. But the finale was like a scene out of movie! The final 2 spellers Grace Ulrich, left, grade 7, and Kaede Shimamura, right, grade 6, battled it out round after round, one up and one down, but neither officially eliminated, spelling harder and harder words, to the gasps from the crowd, until finally Grace spelled the championship word correctly: PETULANCE. "It was the best spelling bee in years", said Bee director Adrienne D'Olimpio. "And since neither of them is in 8th grade, they can both do it again next year!" The LTS Spelling Bee is sponsored by the PTG Group and the LTS After the Bell program. Grace goes on to compete in the state bee at St. Michael's College on March 14th.
